Download the Echo360 app on your mobile device and you can watch lecture recordings on your commute to uni, in bed over the weekend, or on the go between classes.

Last year Macquarie’s Echo360 lecture recording platform went through an upgrade and also launched its mobile app, allowing you to revise for exams, catch up on lecture content and participate in interactive quizzes and polls all on your smartphone or hand-held device.

The app has the ability to download completed recordings for offline viewing within the app. You can download recordings while you’re on campus or using your home wifi, then watch them later when you may not have good 3G/4G reception or do not want to use up mobile data.

There are 160 rooms across campus equipped to automatically capture lecture recordings. In 2017, via the Echo360 platform, 300,000 hours of content were viewed by students, with 8082 slides viewed on average per teaching week. All this you can now access with ease through the mobile app.

“To be able to revise lecture content in the app offline, without having to use up data, will be really handy for my hour-long train commute,” says Luke Wiseman, a 3rd-year Bachelor of Science student.

How to get set up the Echo 360 app:

Open an internet browser in your mobile device

Login to iLearn

Click on Echo360 link in each iLearn unit you want to access the app in, then

Download the Echo360 app via one of the following links:

iOS (via Itunes)

Android (via Google Play)

Windows 10 (via Microsoft.com)

Note that live streaming is currently not available via the app (it’s only accessible on a laptop through an internet browser), but Echo360 is working on it!

Full step-by-step guides on Echo360 are available in the iLearn Quick Guides section under ‘Study’ in Student Portal on the MQ Website.

The start of a new year is a good time to remind ourselves of how to stay secure while using technology at Macquarie University or at home.

Cyber security is a growing issue with global events such as ransomware and data breaches featuring frequently in the mainstream media. This trend is likely to continue in 2018 as more data and services migrate to online systems. While the world of cyber security moves quickly, the principles for protecting yourself and the systems here at the University remain largely the same. MQ IT have selected five key principles to practice while using technology here, at work or at home:

Update software from a reputable source when prompted by your computer or device

Use strong passwords for University and personal accounts

Maintain backups of valuable computer files

Limit data sharing to only those needed

Report incidents of suspicious emails and confidential data exposure

Following these principles is essential for reducing the likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber crime. If you believe that your account has been compromised or would like to report a security incident, please contact the IT Service Desk on 9850 4357 or email help@mq.edu.au.

Macquarie University IT in conjunction with the Optus Macquarie Cyber Security Hub is running student hacking competition Hack Mac 2017 on Thursday 12 October.

Watch as a select group of undergraduate students go head-to-head in an attempt to penetrate the University’s own perimeter defences from a contained external network, competing to win a trip to Aus Cert 2018. Hack Mac 2017 aims to increase awareness of cyber security issues and provides our budding security specialists with rare real-world experience. To make the competition a bit more interesting a number of ‘Honeypots’ are placed around the network as opportunities for additional points.

The event is closely monitored by Jeremy Koster, Macquarie University Information Security Manager and supported by Macquarie University cyber security lectures.

From a tightly controlled environment specifically created for this event, all participants are digitally and physically monitored for the length of the competition and are bound by a strict set of conditions to ensure the security and safety of University data.

The University has extensive protection measures to ensure that staff and student data remains safe. As typical in the industry, the University regularly commissions similar activities to be performed by trusted third parties to test the Universities external defences.

The comp will be held on Level 2 of MUSE from 9am-9pm. Want to find out more? Head to goto.mq/hackmac.

Please note that Macquarie University does not permit hacking or unauthorised access to systems or information. Only contestants competing in the Hack Mac challenge are permitted to partake in the challenge. Contestants are monitored and bound by conditions of entry. Please be aware of the Acceptable Use Policy located on Policy Central.

Cyber attacks are increasing and becoming more sophisticated every day. Phishing, in which a malicious communication attempts to obtain sensitive information, is one of the most common forms of cyber attacks.

It can be easy to fall prey to these attacks, but there are ways to stay cyber aware. Most phishing emails are poorly worded, ask for a username and password, and provide a link that does not end in an official website address, like mq.edu.au.

If you receive a suspicious email to your student email address:

* Report the email as phishing

* Do not click on any links or attachments

* Do not provide OneID login details or share your password

* If you have provided your login details, reset your password here and let the IT Service Desk know.

Stay tuned to MyMQ for the latest tips and tricks about how to stay safe online.
