Sports Scholar Luke and Career and Employment Manager Julie

Macquarie’s got a lot of amazing sports stars. But what happens to those not fated for a lifelong career in their chosen sport? Well, thanks to the new Career Success Program, our sports scholars are discovering what other amazing opportunities are available to them.

“It’s really an opportunity for those students who excel at sport to consider the whole breadth of possibilities,” says Julie Doherty, Macquarie’s Career and Employment Manager. “Some of our scholars won’t go on to have careers in sports, so this program is designed to help them consider their options while they’re still studying.”

The program, which was successfully piloted this session and will continue to be offered to scholars in 2017, was designed to provide the students with the resources to:

– Explore different career paths
– Understand what employers are looking for
– Set goals in the short and long term
– Increase their confidence and competence.

Luke, one of this session’s participants, has succeeded competitively as a basketball referee while also studying law at Macquarie. “The program has been a great experience, because it’s really opened my eyes to a whole range of career options, even ones that allow me to utilise my law degree without just being a lawyer. It’s good to know what opportunities are out there.”
